Emily is a great example of the kind of upscale hostel that goes above and beyond the typical backpacker flophouse. Their motto may be “no frills, just fun”, but it’s the included extras that consistently earn this guesthouse top marks.  The rooms are spotlessly clean but spartan. The dorms have 5 -- 7 single beds (not bunks) and lockers, while the private rooms contain only beds and an attached bathroom.  However, there’s loads of entertainment to be enjoyed in the common area where there’s a 54” plasma TV with daily movie screenings, a billiards table, and a small library to peruse. Wireless internet is free and available through the whole building, but if you’re without your own laptop there are free computer terminals in the main lounge.  On the roof is a garden with fantastic views across the city, lounge chairs for sunbathing or just chilling out, and even a shower-pool where you can cool off from Singapore’s relentless heat and humidity. In addition to the fun on offer, the young and friendly staff are ready to help out with the clerical details of your stay. Photocopying, faxing and free local calls can be done conveniently at the  reception desk.  Rates include buffet breakfast and self-serve coffee and tea are complimentary throughout the day. The location is fine once you know how to find the place, and 24-hour dining and shopping are a short walk away on Sofia Road. If Hangout has one strike against it, it may be that it attracts a younger, more party-oriented crowd than a traditional hotel, but we did spot some families and middle aged couples. With that one caveat aside, I give it a hearty endorsement as one of the best-value accommodations in town.
